lazy &Lit.: Books, Wellbeing, and Community

We’re continuing our celebration of Black-owned bookstores across the country with lazy &Lit., a New York-based bookstore founded by Candice McCoy.

McCoy opened lazy &Lit. on February 14, 2021, bringing together her background in psychology, love of literature, and commitment to self-care. The bookstore pairs books with mental health and wellness resources, with a focus on helping marginalized communities de-stress, prioritize their wellbeing, and access information and education related to mental health.

The store’s approach reflects McCoy’s interest in creating opportunities for readers to engage with books while also connecting with resources that support mental health and self-care.

McCoy is also the bestselling author of BLKGRL, one of the bookstore’s most recommended titles. Readers will also find books by bestselling author Tia Williams among lazy &Lit.’s popular selections.

Celebrating Black Bookstore Day

For Black Bookstore Day on August 29, lazy &Lit. plans to use its platform to highlight fellow Black-owned bookstores.

That approach reflects one of the ideas at the heart of Black Bookstore Day: celebrating individual stores while drawing greater attention to the larger community of Black-owned bookstores and the work happening across the country.
