Beyond the Book, A Literary Experience

In downtown Homewood, Illinois, Beyond the Book, A Literary Experience brings books, creative work, entrepreneurship, and community programming into one welcoming space.

The independent Black-owned bookstore opened on October 8, 2025. Its offerings include curated books, author events, book clubs, youth literacy programs, a professional podcast studio, and Beyond the Book Press. The bookstore serves readers, writers, entrepreneurs, and lifelong learners interested in discovery, creative expression, and meaningful connection.

Meet the Founder

Beyond the Book was founded by Dr. Tenia L. Davis, an entrepreneur, award-winning author, and former C-suite executive with experience across media, publishing, and corporate leadership.

Dr. Davis’s work centers leadership, literacy, and legacy. Through Beyond the Book and Beyond the Book Press, she supports diverse voices, cultivates emerging authors, and creates opportunities for people to connect through storytelling.

Her commitment to youth literacy, entrepreneurship, and creative expression also shapes the bookstore’s programming and broader community presence.

Why Beyond the Book

After years of working in executive leadership and publishing, Dr. Davis recognized the need for a community-centered literary space where people of all ages could gather, learn, create, and grow.

She developed Beyond the Book as a place where literature, culture, conversation, entrepreneurship, and creative expression could exist together. The bookstore gives readers access to thoughtfully selected titles while also creating opportunities for writers, aspiring authors, young people, and community members to develop and share their own stories.

For Dr. Davis, one of the greatest rewards of bookstore ownership is helping people find books that speak to their experiences. She also values the relationships that grow through author events, book clubs, and conversations among readers.

The Responsibility of Black Bookstore Ownership

Dr. Davis views Black bookstore ownership as both a privilege and a responsibility. That responsibility includes preserving Black stories and history, protecting voices that have been overlooked, and creating space for authentic representation across generations.

It also means encouraging future authors, thinkers, and storytellers to recognize the value of their perspectives. Through its books, publishing work, and community programs, Beyond the Book helps strengthen that connection between Black stories, cultural memory, and the writers who will shape what comes next.

On the Shelves

One title Dr. Davis frequently recommends is The New Book by Nikki Giovanni, a collection featuring poems, letters, commentary, and other writings from the celebrated poet and cultural figure.

A highly requested title at the bookstore is I, Medusa by Ayana Gray.

Both selections reflect the range of readers Beyond the Book serves and the conversations its shelves help create.

Beyond the Book is currently finalizing its plans for Black Bookstore Day 2026.
