As we count down to the first Black Bookstore Day on August 29, 2026, we’re highlighting Black-owned bookstores across the country, the people behind them, and the work they’re doing in their communities.
Our first featured bookstore is Loyalty Books, a Black- and queer-owned independent bookstore based in Washington, D.C.
About Loyalty Books
Founded by Hannah Oliver Depp in 2019 and co-owned with Christine Bollow, Loyalty Books was created as an intersectional feminist bookstore committed to centering Black, queer, and other historically marginalized voices.
The store carries books and gifts while creating space for community through author events, book clubs, reading challenges, and other programming. Its approach extends beyond what appears on the shelves, with its values reflected throughout its programming, partnerships, and business practices.
Depp brings years of experience in bookselling and the literary community to the store. She holds a master’s degree in English from American University and has served in leadership and judging roles across the book industry, including with the National Book Awards and Kirkus Prize. She also co-founded the American Booksellers Association’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee, has served on the Bookshop.org board, and has served as president of the New Atlantic Independent Booksellers Association.
