Black Bookstore Day was created to celebrate Black bookstores. Stores move. Websites launch. New locations open. Renovations happen. Anniversaries pass. Fundraising campaigns kick off. Programming, partnerships, and community events are ongoing. To capture your store's information and updates, the Black Bookstore Day website includes two forms.
The first is the Black Bookstore Feature Form. This form is for Black bookstores that would like to be featured across Black Bookstore Day platforms, including the website, social media, educational campaigns, community spotlights, historical archives, and other related materials.
The form asks for foundational information about your bookstore: the name of the store, location, website, social media handles, owner or founder information, store description, photos, and contact information for follow-up. It also asks about your story and purpose.
Why did you open your bookstore? What is your favorite thing about running it? What does being a Black-owned bookstore mean to you? What book do you frequently recommend? What book can you not seem to keep on the shelves? How can people best support your store?
These questions are essential because Black bookstores are not interchangeable. Each space carries its own local context, curation, community, and history. Each owner has made unique choices, taken different risks, and built something that reflects a specific vision. The feature form helps us understand your store beyond a name and address.
The second form is the Shoutouts and Updates Form. This form is for bookstores that have already completed the feature form and want to share later updates.
Maybe your store is celebrating an anniversary. Maybe you are launching a new initiative. Maybe you are expanding, renovating, fundraising, opening an additional location, planning a Black Bookstore Day event, or sharing something else exciting with your community.
Use the shoutouts and updates form for that.
We know bookstore owners are already doing a lot. To keep the process as low-lift as possible, only a small number of form fields are required. Bookstore owners are welcome to answer as much or as little as they are willing and able. If a required question does not apply, “n/a” is fine. The goal is to gather enough information to recognize your store thoroughly, accurately, and respectfully.
We look forward to learning more about your store and sharing more of the work Black bookstores are doing throughout the year.
